A Study on the Utilization and Needs of Health and Welfare Services in Patients With Muscle Dystrophy

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was carried out to increase the awareness, utilization and needs for health and welfare services in patients with muscle dystrophy.
Method: Health and welfare service items were extracted from a ’2008 National Survey of the Disabled Persons’(KIHSA, 2009), ’2011 Guide for Disabled Welfare’(Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2011) and ’Helpline for rare disease’(CDC, 2011). Data collection trough a survey was performed using structured questionnaires, between the period of May and September, 2011. A total of 511 patients participated in this study. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were performed.
Result: The average awareness rate was 43.3%. The average utilization rate was 45.3%. The needs and unmet needs were high on economic and daily life services. There were significant positive correlations between the needs of rare incurable disease services, medical, transportation, tax, residential, daily life services and age, prevalence periods, and the presence of a caregiver. There was a negative correlation between services and incomes.
Conclusion: Patients with muscle dystrophy needs health and daily life support services, as much as their needs for secondary disease management and prevention. Also, the caregiver needs a support group for training and reducing the burden to care patient with muscle dystrophy. Government should promote services to health specialist.
